How to Paint Fabric with Velvet Finishes

Do you have an ugly chair?

We’ve all had them.

But you don’t have to have one anymore! I’m going to show you

And I’m going to share my big secret on how to make your painted fabric projects perfect!

So I got these chairs thinking I would have them reupholstered.  They shape is great, they were just dirty and in need of some love and attention.

You guys know that nothing is safe from my paint brush.

I’ll try to paint anything.

These were a perfect candidate for painting.

When you choose fabric to paint, the smoother the fabric the better.

Chenille or velvet fabric is not going to work too well because it has a nap.

A fairly smooth feel is what you need, it doesn’t have to be completely smooth, but choose a fabric that has no nap.

Wipe the fabric down with a wet rag and clean the (if any) wood with Velvet Finishes Ready.

Now start painting!

I used Velvet Finishes Luxurious.

The painting process is the same as with wood.  Just slap the paint on and lightly pounce down into any pattern or grain that is in the fabric.

This is one coat…

It’s still wet here, but you can see how well one coat covered.

I wanted to give the chair a little pizazz so I added a stripe.

I grabbed my Frog Tape and went to taping!

For this project I used the Multi-Surface tape.

I painted the stripe with Understated.  I also went over the wood.

Since the fabric had a pattern that had straight lines, it was easy to find a line to tape the stripe by.  After two coats of the Understated, I peeled the tape.  Super easy!

Because this is fabric and the fabric wasn’t completely, 100% smooth, the lines are not super crisp like you would see on wood.  That is to be expected.

Now I get questioned a lot about how fabric feels after it has been painted.  People want to know if it feels stiff or does it crack.  Good questions and I am happy to answer No! and No!

Fabric is surprisingly not stiff after painting with Velvet Finishes.

HOWEVER…

here’s the big secret.  The trick to making your fabric smooth as a baby’s butt, the information you have all been waiting for….

Yep, that’s my big secret.

I lightly sand the fabric with a medium grit sanding block after painting.

It’s that simple.

You’re welcome!

Too much fun! I painted couches last summer but unfortunately they were velour. Too bad they weren’t upholstered in this smooth fabric. Oh well.
