Over the years, I have painted A LOT of furniture!
I mean a lot.
I haven’t tried out all of my painting ideas/techniques just yet, but here are my favorite DIY furniture painting projects that I’m convinced anyone can achieve because if I can do it, anyone damn well can.
You just need an idea, Velvet Finishes paint, and in some cases, a good drink in hand!
Easy DIY Furniture Painting Projects
DIY Painting Leather
Have any old, ugly leather or pleather furniture you’re thinking about dumping? Well good news! You don’t have to get rid of it – you can paint it with Velvet Finishes!
DIY File Cabinet Makeover
At the design studio, I need file cabinets near my desk. If not, I file in the floor. It’s not a good look. But neither are file cabinets. They are. So. Ugly.
So I decided to make my file cabinets pretty with this easy diy file cabinet makeover! Oh, and of course Velvet Finishes.
Update your Furniture with Overlay’s Panels
I first discovered O’verlays several years ago. I’ve been hooked ever since.
O’verlays are lightweight, glueable panels that can completely change the way a piece of furniture looks.
They work on wood, metal, mirror, glass – you name it, they even teach you what are metal saw blades made from, so you know they’re experts in these materials.
They are revolutionary!
DIY Paint your Refrigerator
Are refrigerators considered furniture? Probably not, but when they are painted with Velvet Finishes they resemble a great furniture piece!
Don’t let your refrigerator be boring, add some colour to it! It’s practically begging…
Furniture you can Write On!
Want a dresser you can write on? It is possible!
This poor dresser had seen better days. Scuffs, marks and a broken mirror on the top drawer. Sad and unloved. Isn’t she a beaut now?
DIY Vanity
Can Velvet Finishes paint over laminate? You bet your buns!
See how we gave this piece a new life in our tutorial.

DIY Flip a Piano into a Bar
How many of you have a piano that sits lonely in the corner? I did too.
Until I flipped my piano into a bar! Needless to say, we use her a lot more now. 😉
DIY Wet Distress a Coffee Table
By now you guys know that I like for my painting projects to be easy – I mean like taking candy from a baby easy. The same goes for the way that I distress furniture. Now, there are a few ways to distress furniture; a sanding block, an electric sander, and the easiest way ever – the Wet Distressing Technique.
DIY Paint the Bed
Give a bed a new life with adding a dash of Velvet Finishes paint!
This piece had seen better days, now it’s a green dream come true for a special Superhero!

Great articles, I am a painter in Houston Texas. I usually just do houses but you have given me some great Ideas.
I really love the idea of having furniture you can write on. Surprised that this hasn’t gone mass-scale…
It’s so easy to imagine how it could be used in kids rooms for toys, and for organizing closets, and in the bathroom, maybe choosing an organizational scheme, there are so many choices.
Thanks for sharing! I have to try this one out 🙂
